This lovely animal is known as a Carpet Python (Morelia spi lota). It’s one of a number of pythons found in Australia and is generally considered ‘mostly harmless’.

This particular example is currently trying to warm itself up beside our driveway after spending the night curled up under the camper. I put a box over it to protect it further in case of frost.

Its easily one of the longest and therefore oldest wild Carpet Pythons I’ve ever seen. It would be very close to 2 metres in length (well over 6 feet for the Imperialists). It’s also pretty skinny...the drought is biting hard. Unfortunately, now that it is winter, it won’t be fattening itself up because cold is not good for a snake’s digestive system.

Ill keep an eye on him over the day to see where he/she is headed (they are nomadic unless they find a regular food source and secure accommodation...like a rodent occupied house) and if such a heading is going to make things difficult for either us or the snake.

Mostly harmless.

It’s that “mostly” bit that would worry me. The wildlife in Australia is mostly harmless, r ig ht up to the point when it kills you in some hideously painful way.

I say mostly because they aren’t poisonous. However, they do have a mouthful of teeth and, when warmed up, an often cranky attitude. Especially when they get to this size.

It's not that warm and it has already got its head up as a warning!!

Was teaching a bunch of kids today who couldn’t get enough of this guy. I think it was an albino corn snake.

Albinism in snakes is really weird...but that is still a very pretty snake. And if the kids want to work with it respectfully then big ups to them!!

Yeah, these kids were pretty well versed in handling it. He tried to handle it earlier in the day, but could tell it wasn’t in the mood and let it be.
